🤔 Are you unintentionally slowing down your .NET APIs?

Why are you checking for a null and throwing an exception instead of just returning a 500 (unexpected null) or 404 ( null means data with ID not found) in the first place. That’s poor practice irrespective of the performance issue.
The “recommended” example doesn’t check for null and will cause an unhandled exception and a 500 result, just like the first example.
In any case, compared to the network overhead of the API call, the exception handling overhead is utterly trivial.
Using exceptions to deal with expected conditions is very poor practice, but generally only has a significant impact in large loops. One of the worst examples I have seen is a foreach looping over a large collection of objects and trying to cast them into a particular type, using an exception to deal with the failures. That would be a better example.

Cool Error 1000!!! The link to the API (based on .NET) leads to an error.
In reality it is 403 Forbidden, but show error 1000.
