Microsoft's Recall program, initially released as a preview, is a controversial software that captures screenshots every 5 seconds, storing metadata locally. While there are new updates improving security, it remains concerning for privacy advocates. The program is now opt-in and uses Windows Hello for authentication, but potential security risks and unauthorized activation issues persist. Critics argue the underlying data collection remains problematic, despite assurances of better security measures.

That was the last motivation I needed to move everything at home to Linux.

I could imagine Hello being used do decrypt the Recall database on demand. I’ve already seen it in a few places: when trying to log into GitHub via browser or when trying to unlock the password database in KeePassXC - both ask for my fingerprint when accessed.
That being said, I still think Recall is a major red flag. I can only thank Microsoft for finally making me decide to go back to Linux (and we had such a good run too - over a year on Windows 11).

People are clueless, stupid and certain groups take advantage of how easily they can be used to stage and enact corporate warfare.
It’s not even a tool that anyone will encounter on their PCs. You have to buy a special type of hardware to access this feature.
All this is because (as usual) Google and Apple were not ready to compete. If you live long enough you start seeing the pattern.
They both immediately announced they are working on something similar, “only better” while at the same time their media lackeys through their usual scaremongering channels are parroting negative nonsense to counter Microsoft’s positive PR.
