The Linux Cast

The author shares their past enthusiasm for Arch Linux, highlighting its freedom of choice and extensive software availability. However, their preferences have shifted over time, and they no longer see a benefit in using Arch Linux. They now prefer other Linux distributions and packaging options such as flatpaks, finding that any Linux OS can be customized with the right knowledge.

Arch Linux is No Longer  Special To Me

After moving to arch and being a developer, it was awesome to have an easier time getting the latest versions of dev tools. I know I can always download, compile, and setup them up myself (I did it on Ubuntu for a while) but it works well for me. I don’t see a need to use any other distro.
But I’d love to reach a day when I do find a distro that interests me to the point of switching (and investing time experimenting with).

It just begs the “it never was” meme. The “freedom of choice” was only the lack of a proper installer with sane defaults (this changed lately, as far as I know, but never seen it, as I went on another path). To be completely honest, the only difference between distros are the defaults upon installation, and the availabilitity and update speed of the package repository (periodical/rolling, frequency of updates, etc.) which also impacts stability (to a degree at least). It’s just a matter of thinking what your true needs are.
Today I just default to Debian Stable with the base configuration (base system, DE) with Flatpak, chroot, and Podman providing the rest of the environment I need, so that Debian updates are just affecting the base system. That being said, I’m using Linux for over 20 years now, so I might be on the “don’t give a cr*p anymore” path myself. 😅
