<p>Apple’s MacBook Neo is a $599 entry-level laptop powered by the A18 Pro chip — the same chip found in the iPhone 16 Pro. It’s Apple’s most affordable laptop in years, aimed squarely at students, first-time Mac buyers, and anyone currently on a Chromebook or budget Windows PC.</p>
<p>It launched March 11th alongside a busy week of Apple announcements that also included the iPhone 17e, M5 MacBook Air and Pro, and updated iPad Air.</p>

<p>In South Africa, iStore has the 256GB model at R11,999 and the 512GB at R13,999 — about R7,000 less than the cheapest MacBook Air.</p>
<h2>What’s missing compared to the MacBook Air</h2>
<p>The Neo cuts costs in a few noticeable ways. There’s no MagSafe, no Thunderbolt, and the USB-C ports run at USB 2 speeds rather than the faster USB 3 or Thunderbolt you’d get on the Air. RAM is 8GB versus the M4 Air’s 16GB base, a gap Apple attributes partly to the global memory chip shortage. Internal storage is also slower.</p>
<p>The most significant real-world limitation is CPU throttling under sustained load. The A18 Pro is a phone chip, and the Neo’s chassis doesn’t have the thermal headroom to run it at full speed for long.</p>
<h2>How it actually performs</h2>
<p>For everyday tasks — web browsing, documents, video calls — it holds up well. GPU performance is roughly on par with the M1, which is still plenty for most users. Small local LLMs run at around 20 tokens per second, which is usable if not fast.</p>
<p>Video editing and other sustained heavy workloads are where things fall apart. The throttling is real, and if that’s your use case, the M4 Air is the better machine.</p>
<p>Build quality, speakers, and trackpad are all solid for the price. Under $600, it’s hard to argue with the value if your needs are light.</p>
<h2>Where it fits in Apple’s lineup</h2>
<p>The Neo sits below the M5 MacBook Air ($1,099), which starts with 512GB storage and 18 hours of battery life. The Air is the better machine in almost every measurable way — but it costs nearly twice as much.</p>
<p>For someone replacing an aging laptop and mostly doing browser-based work, the Neo makes sense. For anyone doing creative work or running demanding software, the extra money for the Air is worth it.</p>
