Apple fixes bug that cops used to extract deleted chat messages from iPhones

Apple patched a bug in iOS and iPadOS that allowed law enforcement to extract deleted messages from apps like Signal. The flaw caused notification content to be cached in a device database for up to a month, even after messages were deleted or set to auto-expire. The FBI had exploited this using forensic tools to recover deleted Signal messages. Signal president urged Apple to fix the issue, and Apple has now backported the patch to iOS 18 as well.
