Apple introduced native containerization support in macOS 26 Tahoe with a unique VM-per-container architecture that creates dedicated lightweight virtual machines for each container, unlike Docker's shared VM approach. The Swift-based framework provides hypervisor-level isolation, dedicated IP addresses per container, and optimized performance for Apple Silicon. While offering superior security and eliminating many macOS containerization performance issues, Apple's solution currently lacks Docker's mature ecosystem, extensive tooling, and cross-platform compatibility.
