Shopify's Admin API version 2026-04 now allows app-owned metaobjects (identified by types like `$app:example`) to be read and written by their owning app without requiring any access scopes. This includes metaobjects created via declarative definitions. The change reduces merchant friction by eliminating extra permission requests. Note that merchant-owned metaobject types still require specific access scopes.
