Anthropic is suing the US government after being designated a national security supply chain risk — the first time a US company has received such a designation. The decision, made by the Department of War (formerly the Department of Defense under the Trump administration), effectively bars Anthropic from military contracts. The conflict stems from Anthropic's refusal to remove safety guardrails that would have allowed its AI to be used for fully autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance. CEO Dario Amodei called the designation 'legally unsound' and said the company has no choice but to challenge it in court. Meanwhile, OpenAI struck a deal with the Department of War under terms it claims include stronger guardrails, and publicly expressed disagreement with the government's treatment of Anthropic.
