Anthropic acquired Stainless, the SDK generation startup used by OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, and others, for a reported $300M. Stainless will wind down its hosted SDK generator, cutting off a shared dependency that competing AI labs relied on to produce polished client libraries in multiple languages. This is the third move in a pattern: Anthropic also acquired Bun (JavaScript runtime) and OpenAI acquired Astral (Python tooling). The analysis argues frontier labs are shifting competition from model benchmarks to owning the developer toolchain layer — runtimes, package managers, and SDK generators — creating stickier distribution advantages. Affected API companies must now choose between hand-maintaining SDKs, migrating to competing generators, or building in-house tooling.
