Anthropic is in early-stage discussions about designing its own AI chips, according to three sources, as demand for its Claude models accelerates and hardware shortages persist. The company has not yet committed to a design or assembled a dedicated team. Anthropic currently uses Google TPUs and Amazon chips, and recently signed a long-term deal with Google and Broadcom. Its annualized revenue has surged to over $30 billion in 2026, up from $9 billion at end of 2025. Custom chip design can cost roughly $500 million, and similar efforts are underway at Meta and OpenAI.
