Anthropic is in early-stage exploration of designing its own AI chips, according to Reuters sources. No dedicated team has been assembled and no chip design committed to yet. The move is driven by rapidly accelerating compute demand as Claude's annualized revenue run rate surpassed $30 billion, up from $9 billion in late 2025. Anthropic currently uses a mix of Google TPUs, Amazon custom chips, and Nvidia GPUs. Days before this report, the company signed a long-term deal with Google and Broadcom for 3.5 gigawatts of TPU compute starting in 2027. Custom chip development would cost roughly $500 million, a significant but increasingly feasible investment given the company's revenue trajectory. The move mirrors similar efforts by Meta and OpenAI.
