Databricks has announced the General Availability of Unity Catalog Business Semantics, a unified semantic layer built into Unity Catalog that provides consistent business metric definitions across BI dashboards, notebooks, SQL workloads, and AI agents. The core Metric Views implementation is being open sourced in Apache Spark OSS, with Unity Catalog OSS v0.5 support coming soon. Key features include centrally defined KPIs with rich metadata, automatic query materialization for performance, a new point-and-click UI for authoring, and Genie Code AI assistance for metric creation. The release includes integrations with major BI and data tools including Tableau, Sigma, ThoughtSpot, Hex, Omni, Atlan, Monte Carlo, Collibra, Domo, and Anomalo. Databricks has also joined the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI) initiative to promote interoperability.
