The Epic Games vs. Google lawsuit has concluded with a settlement that brings significant changes to Android's app distribution and payment ecosystem. Google will now allow competing app stores via a new registered app store program, making sideloading alternative stores like the Epic Games Store easier and safer. Payment fees are being restructured: Google Play's billing fee drops to 5%, while in-app purchase service fees fall from 30% to 20% (or as low as 15% for new installs in qualifying programs). Subscription fees drop to 10%. The settlement also includes a secretive $800 million partnership between Epic and Google, and Epic CEO Tim Sweeney is reportedly barred from speaking negatively about Google until 2032. Changes roll out globally between mid-2025 and September 2027.
