Google is introducing an 'advanced flow' for Android that allows power users to sideload apps from unverified developers while protecting against social engineering scams. The multi-step process requires enabling developer mode, confirming no one is coaching the user, restarting the device, waiting one day, and authenticating biometrically before gaining install permissions for 7 days or indefinitely. Google is also creating free limited distribution accounts for students and hobbyists to share apps with up to 20 devices without a government ID or registration fee. Both features will be available in August before new developer verification requirements take effect.
