An artificially complex XML schema as a lock-in tool

Microsoft 365's XML document format uses artificially complex schemas as a vendor lock-in strategy. While XML schemas should be simple and accessible for interoperability, Microsoft's implementation features deeply nested structures, excessive abstraction, and convoluted specifications spanning over 8,000 pages of documentation. This complexity makes it nearly impossible for competitors to implement compatible systems, effectively trapping users in Microsoft's ecosystem despite the theoretical openness of XML standards.
