Google announced Chrome will shift from a four-week to a two-week release schedule starting September 8, 2026, with version 153. Each release will include a new milestone in areas like stability, speed, or ease of use, in addition to existing weekly security updates. The move comes as AI-powered browsers from OpenAI (ChatGPT Atlas) and Perplexity (Comet) attempt to challenge Chrome's dominance by rebuilding the browser for an agentic web. Google officially frames the change as serving developers' need for faster access to web platform improvements, though the timing alongside growing AI browser competition is notable. Enterprise users and Chromebook users will retain the eight-week Extended Stable cycle.
