AMD's VP of AI Software, Anush Elangovan, used Claude Code (AI coding agent) to build a pure-Python AMD GPU user-space driver without opening a code editor once. The driver bypasses the ROCm/HIP stack by talking directly to /dev/kfd and /dev/dri/renderD* via ctypes ioctls. It includes KFD ioctl bindings, SDMA copy engine, PM4 compute packet builder, GPU family support for RDNA2/3/4 and CDNA2/3, timeline semaphores, and 130 passing tests on MI300X hardware. The project, inspired by Tinygrad's user-space driver, has since been extended with multi-GPU support and compute-bound kernel functionality.
