Istio 1.29 promotes ambient multi-network multicluster support to Beta, with significant telemetry improvements and connectivity enhancements. A key fix addresses missing peer metadata (source/destination labels showing as 'unknown') in cross-network deployments by enriching the HBONE protocol with baggage headers, enabling ztunnel and waypoint proxies to exchange peer metadata transparently through east-west gateways. This feature is opt-in via the `AMBIENT_ENABLE_BAGGAGE` flag. Additional improvements allow ingress gateways and waypoint proxies to route requests directly to remote clusters. Notable limitations remain: single-network multicluster is still Alpha, and east-west gateway load balancing across networks has known distribution issues being addressed.
