Amazon OpenSearch Service now offers a Capacity Optimized option for blue/green deployments. Previously, blue/green deployments required 100% instance capacity upfront — a cluster with 100 nodes needed another 100 nodes available. The new option falls back to incremental batch deployments when full capacity isn't available, reducing the number of additional instances needed. Customers can choose between the original Full Swap (fastest, requires full capacity) and the new Capacity Optimized option (slower but works with limited capacity). The Capacity Optimized option is recommended for clusters with 30 or more nodes and is available across all AWS Commercial Regions for all OpenSearch and Elasticsearch versions.
