Amazon is ending support for pre-2013 Kindle models on May 20, 2026. Affected devices include the 1st and 2nd Gen Kindle, Kindle DX, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Touch, Kindle 4, Kindle 5, and 1st Gen Paperwhite. However, the impact is less severe than headlines suggest: existing devices won't stop working overnight. Users can still read previously downloaded ebooks and sideload new ones. Only deregistering or factory resetting the device will render it unusable. Alternatives like firmware unlocking, custom software (KOReader), and hardware hacks can extend the usefulness of these old devices further.
