Pi is a minimal, open-source coding agent built on two core philosophies: minimalism (only 4 built-in tools: read, write, edit, bash) and transparency (fully inspectable and modifiable). Unlike Claude Code or GitHub Copilot, Pi is designed to be customized around the developer's workflow via TypeScript extensions, custom system prompts, and skills. A community marketplace already offers packages for subagents, MCP adapters, and plan mode. The tradeoff is that Pi requires TypeScript familiarity and sufficient developer experience to get full value — making it better suited for experienced developers who know exactly what they want from an agent, rather than beginners still learning fundamentals.
