Alem Tuzlak, creator of TanStack DevTools and co-creator of TanStack AI, discusses his journey from running a dev agency to building open source tooling for the TanStack ecosystem. TanStack AI is positioned as a type-safe alternative to Vercel's AI SDK, offering a provider-agnostic interface for chat, image generation, video, audio transcription, and more. Key differentiators include compile-time type safety that maps models to their supported options and tools, transport-agnostic streaming, and AGUI protocol support for standardized agent-to-client communication. The adapter architecture was deliberately split by capability to keep the project scalable for a two-person team. Upcoming features include middleware support, MCP server integration, execution workflows with retry/fallback, and deeper observability through dev tools.
