Researchers at UC Riverside have unveiled a new exploit named AirSnitch, which exposes critical vulnerabilities in Wi-Fi networks by bypassing the client isolation feature. Client isolation is designed to prevent devices on the same network from interacting directly, thereby acting as a crucial security layer. However, AirSnitch highlights significant weaknesses in this feature, affecting networks, including those using WPA2 and WPA3 encryption.
The vulnerabilities arise from several issues: a lack of standardization in IEEE 802.11 client isolation protocols, the use of shared group encryption keys, enforcement gaps across Layer 2 and Layer 3 of the network stack, and insufficient device identity binding between these layers. Such gaps enable a variety of harmful activities, including machine-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks, traffic interception, and manipulation.
The research revealed that all of the 11 commonly used devices tested — from manufacturers like Cisco, Netgear, D-Link, Asus, and Ubiquiti — were susceptible to at least one form of attack. Even routers with open-source firmware like DD-WRT and OpenWrt showed vulnerabilities. These findings have serious implications for Wi-Fi security in home, office, and enterprise environments.
The lead researcher emphasizes that AirSnitch could pave the way for more advanced attacks, such as cookie stealing, DNS poisoning, and even HTTPS decryption. The discovery of these vulnerabilities underscores the urgent need for improved standardization and security practices in Wi-Fi technology to better protect against such exploitation.
