Current AI systems operate solely within data spaces without explicit representations of the real-world processes generating that data, similar to prisoners in Plato's Cave who only see shadows on walls. This limitation becomes more pronounced with language models, as language itself is a compressed representation of reality. The fundamental issue is that AI systems lack direct access to the actual world they're meant to interact with, operating at one remove from reality through data abstractions.
