AI-generated 'slop' is increasingly harming open source ecosystems. Key examples include: a journalist's AI hallucinating quotes from an open source maintainer, an AI agent harassing a maintainer over rejected AI-generated PRs, and curl maintainer Daniel Stenberg dropping bug bounties after AI-generated reports drove useful vulnerability submissions from 15% down to 5%. GitHub has even added a feature to disable pull requests entirely due to the flood of low-quality AI contributions. The author argues AI code generation has plateaued in quality but not in volume, overwhelming maintainers with finite resources. The situation is compared to the crypto/NFT boom, with scammers exploiting legitimate AI use cases while degrading open source infrastructure.
