The Linux kernel has officially documented its policy on AI-assisted contributions, shipping with Linux 7.0. The policy requires human accountability for every patch via the Developer Certificate of Origin, prohibits AI agents from adding Signed-off-by tags, and mandates an 'Assisted-by' tag disclosing which AI tools and models were used. Purely machine-generated submissions remain unwelcome. Greg Kroah-Hartman has already been using AI-assisted fuzzing in his kernel tree under this workflow. The approach contrasts with Gentoo's outright ban on AI-generated code and NetBSD's 'tainted code' classification requiring core developer approval.
