OpenTelemetry has officially graduated within the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), marking the highest maturity level for the open-source observability framework. Seven years after its founding as a merger of OpenTracing and OpenCensus, the project now boasts over 12,000 contributors from more than 2,000 companies, making it the second highest-velocity CNCF project after Kubernetes. The graduation signals governance stability and vendor neutrality, having already eroded proprietary telemetry lock-in across major cloud providers and observability vendors. Looking ahead, OpenTelemetry is positioning itself as foundational infrastructure for AI workloads and autonomous systems, with its JavaScript API package growing from 75 million to over 200 million monthly npm downloads between April 2025 and April 2026.
