Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK) for Java has reached version 1.0. The release introduces new tools including a Google Maps grounding tool, URL context tool, code executors (Docker/Vertex AI), and a computer use tool. New abstractions include an App concept, a plugin system for cross-agent policies, and improved context management to combat context rot. Human-in-the-loop support, new state/memory services (Vertex AI, Firestore), Google Cloud Storage artifact support, and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol integration are also highlighted. A demo app called Comic Trip is walked through, showing a multi-agent pipeline built with Quarkus that analyzes travel photos, retrieves nearby points of interest via Google Maps, and generates vintage comic illustrations using image generation models.
