A2A (Agent-to-Agent) and MCP (Model Context Protocol) are two complementary protocols solving different problems in AI agent systems. A2A enables agents from different vendors or frameworks to discover each other via 'agent cards' and exchange modality-agnostic messages over HTTP using JSON-RPC 2.0, with support for streaming updates via server-sent events. MCP gives individual agents standardized access to external tools and data sources (files, databases, code repos) through a host-server architecture exposing primitives like tools, resources, and prompts. Rather than competing, the two protocols work together: MCP connects agents to data and tools, while A2A connects agents to other agents. A retail inventory example illustrates both in action simultaneously.
