A Valve engineer just stopped Linux from stealing VRAM from your 8GB GPU

Valve Linux graphics engineer Natalie Vock has implemented kernel and userspace fixes to prevent Linux from evicting game VRAM on GPUs with 8GB or less. Previously, Linux couldn't distinguish between VRAM used by active games and background apps, causing performance degradation when VRAM filled up. The solution leverages cgroups and a new DMEM group controller (co-authored with Intel and Red Hat engineers) to prioritize the foreground application's VRAM. Two new userspace packages accompany the fix: dmemcg-booster handles cgroup management to protect game VRAM, while plasma-foreground-booster ensures the active window always gets priority.
