A 20+ year-old KDE bug requesting per-screen virtual desktops has finally been resolved. The fix was implemented by Hynek Schlindenbuch, a PHP developer with minimal C++ experience and no prior KDE contributions. Each screen can now independently show a different virtual desktop in KWin, with the feature landing in the master branch and slated for Plasma 6.7. The implementation is Wayland-only, as X11's EWMH specification has no concept of multiple simultaneous active virtual desktops, and X11 support is being dropped in Plasma 6.8 anyway.

I love how all the community seems to say “Love how KDE solves actual user problems”. I mean… They didn’t for 20+ years. And still, some external contributor needed to make it happen. This is kinda like the true-color gradient issue in firefox; absolute misperception of what users are annoyed of.
It was a major nuisance to even use KDE on my gaming PC where I seldomly even use a 2nd monitor. It was a huge thing, considered minor by KDE.
This is the open-source analogy to the meme of becoming an employee, fixing one bug that annoyed for years, and sending in the letter of resignation.

Don’t get me wrong; it’s their choice where to spend development time. Especially excusable for free-time, unpaid developers. I feel like using an outdated-looking issue tracker with a barrier of upvoting an issue (registration to that particular projects’ issue tracker) is doing a lot of harm here, though. Back then, I checked if an issue existed but didn’t bother to upvote it, as that would have required an account setup… Something they should think about.
Okay, let’s look forward. Finally, I can use KDE as a DE on my secondary devices that I don’t want to spend much maintenance time on ^^ Great! Love it!
