A German company's numeric parser broke during international expansion due to hardcoded locale assumptions. The parser handled German number formatting (periods as thousands separators, commas as decimal points) through convoluted string manipulation, multiple splits, and type coercion. It inconsistently returned integers or strings depending on configuration flags. The solution was replacing it with a proper locale-aware number parser.
