The collaboration between Codethink and the GNOME Foundation has introduced sysext-utils, a set of tools designed to improve the developer experience for building and testing system components on Linux. These tools, built on systemd-sysext and other build systems, enable safer and more efficient iteration by temporarily applying system extensions that revert on reboot. This approach mitigates risks associated with developing on immutable operating systems, allowing for safer testing and artifact building directly on CI. Future work aims to further enhance this workflow.
