A Minimalist's Guide to Software Development: Less Code, More Elegance

It is a good short read, but minimal code isn’t always a better or more readable approach. For example
<pre><code>sqrs = [x**2 for x in range(10) if x % 2 == 0]
</code></pre>
isn’t more readable than
<pre><code>sqrs = []
for x in range(10):
 if x % 2 == 0:
 sqrs.append(x**2)
</code></pre>
a simple for-loop is often much easier to understand and maintain. A lot of times, in practice and my experience, when new colleagues who are just starting out, and who might not be familiar with the syntactic sugar of a certain language (in this instance python) find the first snippet much harder to understand and that leaves us having to write comments to make it easier for them to understand what was the intention, while the second example is simple and straightforward and everyone can understand.

I don’t necessarily agree that less is more. I always prefer more explicit code than “magic code” disguised in simplicity.
