Software engineers are splitting into two groups: those who use AI to accelerate and elevate their thinking, and those who use it to simulate competence without building it. The real danger of AI tools is not laziness but intellectual dependency — substituting generated output for genuine understanding, skipping the friction that builds judgment. The most valuable engineers will delegate mechanics to AI while owning the reasoning, tradeoffs, and design judgment that machines cannot replicate. Early-career engineers face particular risk if they use AI to bypass the struggle that forms foundational skills. Engineering leaders must also learn to distinguish polished AI-assisted output from real technical depth, or risk degrading the knowledge environment of their entire organization.
