DOS really couldn't do much more than manage the hardware and allow the user to launch applications. Microsoft assumed the user would spend most of their time in a few key applications, such as a word processor or spreadsheet. DOS never strayed far from the original design, which proved limiting. MS-DOS 5.0 in 1991 was the first time DOS began to feel "modern"
