A beta is like inviting guests over

Beta testing works best when done late in development, just a week or two before launch at version 0.99. The goal isn't gathering fundamental feedback but using external users as a forcing function to clean up loose ends and polish details you've been postponing. Like preparing your house for dinner guests, knowing others will see your product motivates you to address those small issues you could live with internally but shouldn't ship publicly.
