The software engineering job market faces a paradox: while there's a projected shortage of 1.2 million engineers by 2026, junior hiring has nearly stopped. Companies increasingly rely on AI to boost senior developer productivity rather than training juniors, creating a talent pipeline crisis. Entry-level candidates now send 200-400 applications before getting offers, with computer science showing 6.1% unemployment. This short-term focus threatens long-term industry sustainability, as the lack of junior training will create a talent cliff in 3-5 years when seniors retire or transition out.

This Software Industry is Cooked

On the upside, we senior engineers are going to be an invaluable commodity within a few years - which is the outcome many of us were predicting (and warning about) as this AI bubble took off.
The unfortunate bit is that it’s going to take even longer for us to really strong arm organizations into hiring juniors again.

Yeah so interesting. So we basically have to go from junior to senior via unpaid internship! 🙃 Wow. This is a time bomb ticking and also just saw the image from THEO that clearly shows the graph where we are soon doomed… Interesting in the future to see how much people know hopefully the last dinosaurs in the industry will share the knowledge to some juniors in the industry before the are going on holiday for the rest of their lives. :D

I find the short sightedness in so many companies very concerning. So much focus seems to lie on the immediate gain or next quarter’s forecast. But looking a year, 2 or even 5? Naaah … thanks!

20 years ago nobody expected to receive paid internship. we studied, learned, built hobby projects, spent late nights coding and then got the first paying jobs. Nobody will allow me to become a paid taxi driver, if I don’t have the drivers licence. What’s the difference?
