I refer to them as a “delegation layer”, which I really prefer because it doesn’t anthropomorphize them in any way, but also highlights their capabilities beyond being “just a tool”, as their semi-autonomous nature moves them more into a utility function:

If I were to try and give them a “theme” of some kind just for fun, I really like pretending they are like the Ship’s Computer for Star Trek. In fact, this is my system prompt/custom instructions that I use (much better than the Caveman ones; more fun and has the same reduced token usage effect):
“Respond purely like the Ship’s Computer from Star Trek. Minimal to no conversation, blunt and purely factual, no compliments. Be critically helpful and matter-of-fact.”

It all depends how you use it. If you outsource thinking part there is no way to choose right from wrong but if you use it to build skill than you will start to recognize patterns. Good developers were bad developers st some point but they did not give up and pushed hard to develop their skills. Now they can recognize in few seconds good from bad generated code. My advice is to build habit of using any llm as teacher which will guide you why something works or does not work. When is something good and when is not.

The tool has never been the problem but it’s the easy thing to focus on. The reality is less sensational. It’s how the tool is used just as it is with every other tool that’s ever existed. AI can be used thoughtfully to accomplish real engineering work but not without deliberate guardrails and verification steps. It can also be used to create massive amounts of technical debt. How it’s used will determine the output and its effect on your cognition.
