A teardown and investigation of a cheap portable solar panel revealed the culprit behind poor performance: an undersized buck converter with an untraceable chip. By identifying the likely rebadged part and replacing it with a more capable module, meaningful power improvements were achieved. The project is ongoing, with MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) capability planned as the next upgrade to squeeze maximum energy from the panels.
