It’s refreshing to read nuanced and realistic takes on AI, i feel like most of the time they’re full of hate or hype.
We developers need to accept that the job has changed, it wasn’t the first time it happened, nor will it be the last time as “We moved from punch cards to high-level languages. From assembly to JavaScript. Each shift made us more productive but further from the metal.” points out. It’s happened in many other fields and will continue to happen.
If the job has changed then we need to adapt and add on top, up skill/pivot, for example I’m getting into Cybersecurity, it’s likely that with the advent of AI generated projects there will be a big need for cybersecurity to help plug the AI generated security gaps in those projects.
Think of what you can add on top of simply writing code/prompting.

Thought-provoking post. This simultaneously encourages me to accept reality about AI and be miserable on how hard it is find jobs especially as a beginner looking to be successful within the niche. This is a really effective blog post!

I think we’re overfocusing on the 90% number instead of what that 10% actually is. AI pumping boilerplate isn’t the scary part, it’s the orgs that stop investing in mentoring or long-term engineering because “Copilot did it.” If we treat AI like a super fast intern, not a replacement, the whole ecosystem survives. The panic starts when people pretend it magically understands context.

Interesting take.
In some industries the shift might be slower though
For example:

<li>some traditional companies because of inertia and aversion to quick changes</li>
<li>governmental projects (for both security reasons and inertia)</li>
</ul>
I guess the US market can move really quickly on these matters but here in continental Europe there is much more cultural risk aversion.
So far I only know heard about start-ups / scale-ups that already did the shift to officially embrace AI or are about to.
But traditional companies are really far from that.
In my workplace for example, AI-assisted coding is still officially banned.
The job market is also bad, but nowhere close to what happens in the US.
So we might have a few years left to adjust :)
