Microsoft is removing workarounds for creating local accounts in Windows 11, forcing users to sign in with Microsoft accounts. Combined with ads in the start menu and privacy concerns around Copilot, developers are increasingly frustrated with Windows. Meanwhile, Apple's recent UI quality has declined. Linux distributions like Omachi with Hyperland offer smooth, customizable developer experiences that rival or exceed macOS, making 2025 potentially the year developers seriously consider switching to Linux.

2025 The Year Of The Linux Desktop

I think Omarchy is an excellent move — finally a Linux distro that feels built for developers, not just by developers.
But from my experience (starting before MS-DOS, through every major platform since), that’s only half the story.
The real challenge is connecting to the rest of the world — companies and clients that run on MS Teams, Office, or other proprietary systems that simply don’t work well on Linux.
Many of the tools we need to test or integrate with aren’t even ported to Linux because the market is too small.
So while Omarchy may be technically superior to Windows or macOS for development, the question that decides everything is:
How do we bridge this world with the one most businesses still live in?
Running two separate systems isn’t a pragmatic long-term solution — we need real interoperability, not isolation.

Microsoft is just handing over its crown. Good riddance.

I love Linux, but use Windows as a daily driver. I know very few Windows developers who have actually tried to avoid logging in with Microsoft when setting up Windows. The account is free and you can still choose if you’re going to use their products.
Should Microsoft let you set up a machine without signing into Microsoft? Yes, this restriction makes no sense.
But will this change cause hoards of developers to switch to Linux? I doubt it
