2023 DevOps is terrible. My analysis of modern DevOps evolution is terrible. I've been around the DevOps/Cloud area of the IT industry for a few years now. The shift Big techs aside, there are a few companies out there, able to implement and manage DevOps at scale.

It’s an unfortunate side-effect of the war on payroll. Organisations are trying to be more lean and that results in people wearing many hats.
Currently, I’m context switching multiple times a week, into DevOps, Cloud Engineer, Data Engineer, and the place where I want to be, Software Engineer.
It’s an exhausting experience and I feel like I often don’t get time to evolve my skillset beyond just “surviving”. I’m genuinely excited when I get a feature request ticket because I get to build something, rather than click buttons and stare at data lineage.

I’ve spent quite some time trying to build a streaming platform that scales to millions (similar to Twitch). The amount of infrastructure tools and services ive tried would make you cry. We’ve used Twilio (50 user per channel limit), AWS with their services, MediaSoup on AWS with K8s, MediaSoup on Digital Ocean with K8s. All of these solutions were over-engineered, very costly, and maintaining them was hell. Also they never met our requirement of scaling to millions without costing an absurd amount.
I’ve come to realize that tools like Cloudflare and Vercel solve every issue in the book.
1-click deployments OR integrate their service into your CICD pipeline (we did this with GitHub Actions).
There’s only ONE scenario you should ever be using K8s nowadays, complex microservices architectures with multiple interconnected services.
For the remaining 99% of devs, deploying using Cloudflare Pages to scale to millions in a heartbeat AND using their serverless offering, Cloudflare Workers, can handle everything.
And we pay pennies for such architecture.

I had my eyes on devOps for a while , although i never fully understood what it is. I know i wanna move to a IaC role eventually , reading this made me rethink on what i thought devops is and weather i should try to get in right now
