A single victim lost over $282 million in Bitcoin and Litecoin through a hardware wallet social engineering scam on January 10, 2026. The attacker transferred approximately 2.05 million LTC and 1,459 BTC, then converted much of it to Monero through instant exchanges and bridged Bitcoin across multiple blockchain networks using Thorchain. The incident highlights the continued threat of social engineering attacks in cryptocurrency, occurring despite a reported decline in overall crypto exploit losses from $194.3 million in November to $76 million in December 2025.
