OpenAI and Google adopt C2PA and SynthID to label AI-generated images

OpenAI is now embedding two layers of provenance signals into AI-generated images: C2PA Content Credentials and Google DeepMind’s SynthID invisible watermark. The two approaches are meant to complement each other. C2PA metadata records origin and edit history in a readable format, but it can be stripped. The timing lines up with a broader push from Google. SynthID has now been applied to over 100 billion images and videos and roughly 60,000 years of audio. Google is rolling out SynthID verification across Search and Chrome after it was used 50 million times in the Gemini app. The Pixel 10 was the first smartphone to embed C2PA Content Credentials natively, with video support coming to Pixel 8, 9, and 10. Google is also launching an AI Content Detection API on Google Cloud for businesses that want to identify AI-generated media from Google and other models.
Other companies are joining in: Kakao, ElevenLabs, and NVIDIA have adopted SynthID, and Meta plans to label camera-captured Content Credentials on Instagram.
The obvious limitation here is scope. These measures only apply to outputs from companies that voluntarily adopt them. A lot of AI image tools have little incentive to implement provenance standards, so the ecosystem remains patchy. Watermarks and metadata help when they’re present — they don’t do much about the images generated by tools that never bothered.
